Rehabilitation Services
Being sidelined due to pain, injury or surgery can definitely put a
crimp in your lifestyle. The Rehabilitation Services department at
Memorial
Hospital can help restore, maintain or improve your physical ability,
so you can get back to your normal routine.
Once your doctor refers you to our rehabilitation department, our
specialized team (which may include a physiatrist, physical therapist,
occupational therapist, speech therapist or audiologist) will evaluate
and treat your
condition.
Our professional staff and services are used to treat everything from
arthritis, fractures,
strains and sprains, to serious medical conditions like brain or
spinal
cord injuries, cancer, stroke, speech and language disorders and
more.
Our job is to make the most
dramatic difference we can to improve your quality of life.
Physical
Therapy
Memorial Hospital's therapists and therapy assistants provide service
to patients who have impairments, functional limitations,
disabilities,
or changes in physical function and health status resulting from
injury, disease or other causes. Our staff includes therapists with
advanced training and interests in foot orthotics, orthopedic
treatment, spine rehabilitation, vestibular rehabilitation,
sport-specific training,
neurological rehabilitation and aquatic assisted therapy.
With services on both an inpatient and outpatient basis, physicians
refer patients for treatment of musculoskeletal, neuromuscular,
orthopedic and sports related conditions and injuries.
Physical therapy is available at both the hospital's main campus on
London Avenue and at our satellite office at the Union County YMCA. A
warm water pool provides the opportunity for aquatic assisted
therapy.
Occupational
Therapy
Our occupational therapists have a wide range of skills and expertise
working closely with physicians, nurses and other therapists. They
help
patients achieve their maximum level of independence following an
injury or disease.
Services are provided both for inpatients and outpatients.
Independence
with everyday activities (self-feeding, bathing, dressing and work
activities) is improved with work on upper extremity strengthening,
range of motion, fine motor skills and coordination. When functional
skills cannot be restored, our therapists work with patients to find
compensatory or alternative methods to accomplish these activities of
daily living.
Much of our outpatient work focuses on restoring and/or maximizing
functional use of the hands and arms after an injury or disease. Our
certified hand therapists work closely with the orthopedic surgeons to
maximize success for the patient.
Speech and Hearing Therapy
Memorial Hospital's speech therapists provide evaluation
and
treatment of patients with speech disorders caused by stroke,
progressive neurologic disorders, head injury, delays in speech and
language development in children, and developmental disorders
including
- aphasia
- apraxia of
speech
- articulation problems
- dysanthria
- stuttering
- memory/cognitive communication disorder
Speech pathologists provide each patient with a thorough one-on-one
evaluation and an individualized diagnostic and treatment plan is
developed. The patient's physician then receives a report complete
with
recommendations for a treatment plan.
Patients with voice disorders caused by abusing the voice, progressive
neruologic disorders, psychogenic voice disorders, reflux laryngitis,
head and neck cancer, viral infections, intubation and spontaneous
vocal conditions from unknown causes are welcomed.
We also provide evaluation and treatment of patients with swallowing
disorders caused by stroke, progressive neurologic disorders,
dementia,
head and neck cancer and laryngectomy. These disorders may
include:
- aspiration of solids or liquids
- choking
- dehydration
- malnutrition
- globus sensation (feeling
of a lump in the throat)
